Common Walnut Tree (English Walnut)

The common walnut is a very handsome tree, that has mid-green, large pinnate leaves that feel leathery and are aromatic, these leaves turn a rich golden-yellow in autumn. walnut bears small greenish male catkins in clusters and small inconspicuous female flowers on the same tree, ripening in the autumn into a fruit with a green, semi-fleshy husk and a brown corrugated nut. The whole fruit, including the husk, falls in autumn; the seed is large, with a relatively thin shell, and edible, with a rich flavour. The walnut is also of spreading habit into a handsome rounded tree.
